Minister of Higher Education Science and Innovation, Dr Blade Nzimande, says a total number of Covid-19 positive cases reported at universities as of 13 November 2020 are 3088 (with 1499 being the staff and 1588 students). He was briefing the media on his departments plans for the reopening of tertiary institutions and the contribution of science in the fight against the virus, yesterday afternoon.
Blade Nzimande says a total of 58 staff members and students at universities have succumbed to Covid-19 since November last year.
Nzimande says 3088 staff and students have tested positive for Covid-19 since the end of last year and the figures could be much higher as data collection hasn’t been easy during the festive season.
He further say that the department will be receiving an updated report on infections and fatalities at various universities in the report due on the 20th January 2021, this coming Wednesday.
He added that the department has invested about R68 million rand in research aimed at combatting the virus and that it is working with global science in finding solutions to minimize infections.
