Police Minister, Bheki Cele said that South Africa recorded 12 218 of people who were raped between October and December last year. He was delivering speech on the release of Q3 crime stats yesterday.
Police Minister Bheki Cele said that it was an increase of 181 cases, amounting to a 1.5% increase compared to the previous reporting period.
Bheki Cele also said that over 4900 of the rape incidents took place at the home of the victim or the home of the rapist. He further said that 570 were domestic violence related and 547 of rape cases in this category, involved female victims and 23 were males.
He added that Inanda, Umlazi in Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape’s Lusikisiki police stations recorded the highest incidents of rape.
