The South African Union of Studens (SAUS) has given the Minister of Higher Education, Science & Innovation DR.Blade Nzimande deadline ,until 5pm on Friday to respond to their demands amid the (NSFAS) National Student Financial Aid Scheme and the #FeesMustFall movement, failing which they will participate on a nation-wide shutdown.
Following the death of Mthokozisi Mtumba on Wednesday outside Wits University over the protests by students across the country against financial exclusion. The SAUS says the government is violating the rights of students , including right to life, free education and freedom of speech. The Union says they would support all Student Representatives Council’s (SRC) engaged in protest action. They have sent Nzimade letter demanding answers by 5pm Friday.
their demands are as follows:
*Justice for the family of Mthokozisi
*Immediate privition of post-graduate funding
*Allocation of NSFAS funding for first-time entering students
*Laptops must be provided
*Students allowances to be provided in March
*Increase in student enrolment quotes
*A zero percent increase for the 2021 academic year
*The extention of the registration period to the 30th April 2021 considering the difficulties that a number of students are crippled with
*SAUS and SRC members are demanding all students to campus under alert level 1 of the Lockdown
Nzimande acknowlwdged receipt of the letter on Thursday when he addressed a press briefing on the latest Cabinet meeting outcomes.
