Seventeen suspects aged between 18 and 50 appeared in the Roodepoort and Johannesburg Magistrates Court this morning, the 30th July 2021 for contravening the criminal amendment Act 101 of 1956 and fraud. They were facing charges of fraud for allegedly selling illegal gas cylinders filled with illicit gas. Hawks Serious Organized Crime Investigation in Krugersdorp together with the Gauteng Tracking Team conducted this intelligence driven operation yesterday in Florida.
Hawks spokesperson Ndivhuwo Mulamu says, “during the sting operation on Thursday, the investigation team recovered the R2800 entrapment cash and seized the gas cylinders”. He furthermore said investigation led the team to premises in Langlaagte where a search and seizure warrant was executed, and sixteen additional suspects were apprehended.
Fraud operation of illicit filling station was fully functioning without accreditation by gas cylinder companies, Affrox, EP Gas, Orix Gas, Easi Gas and Raelite Gas. “Amongst other items seized for investigation, police confiscated over 500 gas cylinders in different sizes worth approximately half a million rand. The investigation continues, and more arrests cannot be ruled out” added Mulamu.
