Bongani John Masombuka (37), Mashudu Malema (34), Sfundo Harrison Nkosi (33), Khumbudzo Solomon Mukhuba (31) and Brien Makhubedu (27) were sentenced to one life term each collectively in the Pretoria High Court on Wednesday, 04 August 2021, for murder, kidnapping, possession of fire arm, ammunition, theft and attempted robbery.
Edwin Dumisani Masilela was shot by Mukhuba as he tried to drive away when he saw them approaching his vehicle on the 2nd of August 2017 in Tembisa during a hijacking and he later died in hospital. Between 18:00 and 19:00 same day the five robbers had already hijacked Jeep Wrangler at Dungezi Street in Daveyton and kidnapped the owner and thrown him in the boot.
The National Prosecuting Authority says the five were further sentenced to 175 years imprisonment collectively. The Judge Masopa ordered that the sentence run concurrently with the life sentence.
Dumisani’s mother Sabatha Masilela says the loss of her son affected her family to such an extent that she even lost her job as a teacher because she could not cope and she is now forced to take care of two Masilela’s siblings as a single parent.
