Limpopo MEC for Social Development Nkakareng Rakgoale has condemned the violent killings of women over the weekend in supposed Gender Based Violence and Femicide related incidents in the Vhembe District.
In the first incident, police officer allegedly shot and killed his wife at Vyenboom near Vuwani. He later turned the gun on himself. Moreover, in Waterval near Elim a 41-year old woman and her boyfriend were burnt beyond recognition in a house after it was allegedly set alight by the boyfriend and further to this, a 99-year old woman was stabbed to death allegedly by her relative in a family dispute.
MEC Rakgoale says that it is disheartening to still see incidents of Gender Based Violence and Femicide continue to happen even during women’s month. As the Department of Social Development, they have family preservation programs that are aimed at building strong family units. The MEC also outlined that Social workers have been dispatched to the affected families to start providing psychosocial support.
Furthermore, MEC Rakgoale says people who are having problems in their relationships and families must find peaceful means to resolve their problems or alternatively contact social workers for professional assistance.
