The Limpopo Department of Social Development is assessing the extent of the damage caused after one of the houses at the Irish Children’s Home in Giyani was destroyed by fire last night. 15 children were rescued unharmed by the employees at the Child and Youth Care Centre.

MEC Nkakareng says they would like to commend the child and youth care workers for having managed to evacuate all the 15 children who were the occupants of the five bedroomed house.

Their infrastructure unit, which will this morning start conducting an assessment, will be able to determine the extent of the damage caused to their infrastructure. The incident will not affect the normal running of the centre as there are enough beds to accommodate those who have been affected.

She further says Social workers are providing psychosocial support to children who witnessed the incident.

The police’s forensic investigations will assist in establishing the cause of the fire.
