The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) held its Special National Executive Committee (SNEC) meeting on Sunday the 19th of September 2021. The objective of the meeting was to reflect on the stubbornness of employers, who are denying to give workers wage increases in the steel and engineering sector.
One of the employer’s associates represents over 430 thousand workers in the Engineering sector and they are currently negotiating a wage deal because the current agreement expired on the 30th of June.
Furthermore, employees say they have secured a certificate of non-resolution, which allows the union and their members to embark on a national strike that is meant to happen on the 5th of October 2021
It is alleged that the employer’s denial of the agreement left NUMSA workers with no choice but to strike until their demands are met.
Numsa’s General Secretary Irwin Jim explains that the purpose of the march on that day is to demonstrate against employers who have shown that they are untouched by the suffering of workers and their families, they care only about their profits.
