The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) will on Tuesday, 05 October 2021 march to the offices of the Metals and Engineering Industries Bargaining Council (MEIBC) as part of the first day of action for the National Engineering Strike. Marches will also be taking place in the Eastern Cape, the Northern Cape, Kwa-Zulu Natal, and rallies will be held in the Western Cape.
NUMSA is calling on all workers to come out and to join the strike in defence of their just demands for a meaningful increase. This is a call for a total shut down of the engineering sector until employers see sense. This is a sector which employs a minimum of 430 thousand workers and they can all participate in the strike.
Furthermore, Trade unions MEWUSA and UASA have requested strike certificates in case their members wish to participate as well. Therefore, all workers in Engineering are able to strike if they want to. The strike is legally protected which means that all workers in engineering can participate without fear of being disciplined, whether they are members of the union or not.
