59 SUICIDAL CASES AMONGST TEENAGERS IN LIMPOPO RECORDED

Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has raised serious concerns as numbers of teenagers committing suicide continue to increase while the Province is observingĀ  World Mental health day on the 10th October 2021 under the theme , “Mental health in an unequal world”.

Dr.Ramathuba says this year’s observation is under difficult conditions asĀ  COVID 19 had a serious impact on worsening the situation and left many people frustrated also forced the society to live under a new normal.

Accoding to the Forensic Pathologists , it is observed that most teenagers commit suicide due to mental health and depression as from the 1st January 2021 to date and statistics shows that 59 teenagers have committed suicide, of the 59 total number, 49 have hanged themselves, 5 died by injecting themselves with substances, 4 died of overdose(pills), and 1 through gunshot.

Furthermore, MEC Ramathuba says mental health illnesses have never been treated as medical emergencies like other medical conditions, therefore, they call upon society to act with sense of emergency whenever they see someone acting differently.
