A 50-year-old man, Ahmed Kafecho appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court earlier today facing charges related to Trafficking In Persons (TIP) with alternative counts of attempted extortion and kidnapping.
This after members of the South Afrian Police Services (SAPA) in Johannesburg made a search operations on Thursday, 14 October 2021, in Zakariyyapark, south of Johannesburg and about 50 Ethiopian Nationals aged between 12 and 50 held against their will were rescued.
The attempted extortion and kidnapping alternative counts stems from allegations that the accused demanded money from the families of the men held captive, in exchange for their release.
The rescued men are currently being processed by the Department of Home Affairs to determine their status in the country.
Furthermore, the case was postponed to 25 October 2021 for further investigations and possible bail hearing.
