The South African National Aids Council (SANAC) in collaboration with The National Sex Worker Sector, Government and Development Partners inclusive of (UNFPA) today, 28 October 2021 launched the new national sex worker, HIV, TB, and STI plan at Polokwane, Library gardens in Limpopo and in Johannesburg at the Premier Hotel OR Tambo under the theme”Descriminalise sex work, keep the promise”.

The launch is led by the Minister of health, Dr Joe Phaahla alongside the deputy Minister of Justice and constitutional development, John Jeffrey and the South African Police Services (SAPS)

It was reported that sex workers continue to be the subject of human rights violations, gender based violence, ill treatment by the law enforcement and the public as well.

Limpopo Media liason for sex workers, Mpho Lekgwatha says the aim of the event is to teach sex workers to protect themselves against HlV, STI and other chronic diseases by practicing safe sex and she is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to intervene as he promised to do so in 2016 when he was a deputy president.

One of the sex workers says”my journey as a sex worker and a mother of four began in 2012 “Life has changed since then, I have been struggling to make ends meet “I tried to find other work out of sex work, but with no success as I don’t have higher qualifications at education level”
