An extra ordinary approach is needed to clamp down on the concerning rate of stock theft in Mareetsane and surrounding villages.
According to the MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng the best way to address this level of organised criminality is to find new solutions.
The Mareetsane Police Station polices five villages as well as over 60 farms with variation in size. Currently, there are about 200 stock theft cases that are under investigation.
As part of the Accelerated Service Delivery Programme (ASDP)- Thuntsha Lerole Reloaded, MEC Morweng embarked on an oversight visit to the station to intervene.
“I have received a detailed account of the challenges experienced by the police station. Stock theft, sticks out like a sore thumb and has become a priority to us. We need to urgently re-strategise and find innovative ways to root it out.
“In order to provide them with the support they require, I will engage the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Patrick Asaneng to see how we can increase the station’s capacity and ensure that they service the community adequately.”
