Public protector highlighted that her office doesn’t take anyway sides

Few days ago the public protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka was criticised by other political parties for protecting President Cyril Ramaphosa for handing over RDP house during local vote.

Gcaleka was also criticized for not taking decision regarding the scandal of phala phala investigation.

During a recent parliamentary briefing, Gcaleka made her position clear that their aim is to serve the citizens of this country.

She said “My office investigates complaints without fear, favor or prejudice. We follow the law, not political sentiments or public pressure.”

Gcaleka started her role back in 2023 after taking over from Busisiwe Mkhwebane who was suspended.

Gcaleka has faced scrutiny over several high-profile cases involving government officials, with critics questioning her approach to presidential matters.

Public Protector emphasized her office’s constitutional independence, stating all findings are subject to public and judicial review.

Gcaleka said “We answer to South Africa’s people. That’s our democracy at work, We enforce legislation, not emotions.”

According to Fave_News: Gcaleka also highlighted challenges facing Chapter 9 institutions, citing limited resources, staffing shortages and political attacks as threats to their oversight effectiveness.

While Parliament’s justice committee acknowledged her stance, they reaffirmed their commitment to monitoring the office’s impartiality.

As political tensions persist, Gcaleka’s unequivocal position reinforces the Public Protector’s role as a guardian of public – not political – interests.

Her remarks underscore the delicate balance these institutions must maintain in South Africa’s charged political climate.
