The Lephalale Local Municipality occasionally urges drivers to exercise extreme caution on Nelson Mandela Road due to ongoing municipal maintenance, road marking, grass cutting, and the presence of heavy-duty vehicles, as it serves as a primary conduit to nearby mines and power stations.
To stay safe and avoid delays, consider these local guidelines and trade-offs:
Traffic Management: Expect temporary lane adjustments and slow-moving municipal vehicles. Obey flaggers and temporary road signs.
Alternative Routes: If you want to bypass work zones or congestion, consider taking O.R. Tambo Road (R510), as it runs parallel to Nelson Mandela Road and connects major areas of Lephalale.
Lephalale Local Municipality is also being in full swings to upgrade the infrastructures and do more service delivery.
Recent and ongoing service delivery operations include:
Electricity & Streetlights: Maintenance teams are working across the Lephalale town and Onverwacht areas as part of the “Tsuma Mabone” initiative to restore and fix functioning streetlights.
Water & Sanitation: Water tankers are being deployed to areas like Steve Biko Village and Shongoane.
Sanitation crews are actively responding to overflowing sewers and blocked manholes in Onverwacht (Kaameldoring Street/Thabazimbi road) and Marapong Ext 4.
Waste Management: Following oversight visits to Mamojela Park and Mahlakung, municipal teams and local community members are executing targeted cleaning and debris-clearing campaigns.
NB: Lephalale Municipality have urged the citizens to report lack of specific service outages, to notify which neighborhood you are in (e.g., Marapong, Onverwacht, or one of the rural villages) and what specific service is down (water, electricity, or waste)? Municipality is willing to check if there are localized alerts or specific maintenance schedules for your area.
