The Capricorn District Municipality warns about wildfires (veld fires) because the region faces a high-risk winter and spring fire season.
Abundant vegetation from heavy summer rains creates heavy dry fuel loads, which easily ignite during dry, windy, and hot conditions.
This comes after major part of the Limpopo Province has experienced the reoccurring of wildfire spreads.
Between March and August 2026, severe wildfire conditions and actual fire incidents have been recorded across all five district municipalities of the Limpopo Province.
Following historic summer flooding that left behind unusually dense vegetation, the winter drying cycle turned the entire province into a high-risk zone.
The specific affected districts and notable areas include:
1. Capricorn District
Notable Areas: Dalmada, Polokwane outskirts, Molemole, and Lepelle-Nkumpi.
Incident Details: Runaway veldfires notably impacted areas just outside Polokwane along the R71 route near Dalmada, burning land near the Onverwacht gravel road and creating heavy smoke corridors that blinded motorists.
2. Mopani District
Notable Areas: Greater Tzaneen, Letaba, Ba-Phalaborwa, and local farming hubs.
Incident Details: As part of the Letaba Fire Protection Association (FPA) network, agricultural fields and grazing lands here faced critical Fire Danger Index (FDI) warnings. Local awareness campaigns were fast-tracked alongside entities like Working on Fire to help farmers manage extreme fuel loads.
3. Waterberg District
Notable Areas: Thabazimbi, Rooiberg, Lephalale, and Marakele National Park.
Incident Details: Renowned for mountainous terrain and dense bushveld, this district has actively combated raging bushfires. Local bodies like the Thabazimbi FPA and Rooiberg FPA have historically deployed dozens of firefighters to suppress intense, wind-driven blazes in these eco-tourism and farming belts.
4. Vhembe District
Notable Areas: Makhado, Musina, and Thohoyandou outskirts.
Incident Details: After experiencing the highest rainfall totals earlier in the year, the rapid winter dry-out left high fuel volumes, triggering repeated “Extremely Dangerous” fire warnings from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) heading into August.
5. Sekhukhune District
Notable Areas: Groblersdal, Elias Motsoaledi, and Fetakgomo Tubatse areas.
Incident Details: Rural valleys and community grazing lands throughout Sekhukhune have been tightly monitored due to strong seasonal winds that drive fires across community farm borders.
