A 48-year-old man, from Roodepan, Kimberley, was recently sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old victim, on Christmas Day in 2024.At approximately 18:00 on Wednesday, 25 December 2024, the victim was walking home when the accused accosted her in the street and forcibly dragged her into a nearby shack.
Once inside, the accused undressed the victim, threw her onto a bed, and proceeded to rape her.Fortunately, a passer-by noticed the incident and intervened.
He forcefully gained [dragged victim] entry into the shack and found the accused in the act of raping the child.
The witness managed to remove the accused from the scene and immediately alerted the police, who arrested the suspect on the scene.
A case of rape was registered at Roodepan Police Station for further investigation and was assigned to Warrant Officer Jakob Johannes du Plessis, of the Galeshewe Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.
The investigating officer successfully opposed all bail applications by the accused, ensuring that he remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.
The court subsequently found the accused guilty and sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment. He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
