According to SAPS statement: OR Tambo #StockTheft Prevention Task Team arrested two elderly men, aged 67 and 74, for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at Gaduka locality, Upper Ncise Administrative Area, in Mthatha.
The arrests were effected on Friday, 30 January 2026, at approximately 01:00, following information received by the police.
Today the members of the task team decided(were handed search warrant) to conducted searches at the suspects’ residences.
During a search at the homestead of the 74-year-old suspect, police recovered a CZ 7.65 (9mm) pistol with an intact serial number, as well as live rounds of ammunition, hidden in his bedroom.
The suspect failed to produce a licence to lawfully possess the firearm and ammunition and was arrested on the spot.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm was previously due for destruction(reportedly being used) in 2018.
In a separate search, the 67-year-old suspect was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco pistol with an erased serial number, along with live rounds of ammunition.
He was also unable to provide a valid licence(proof of the ownership)and was subsequently arrested.
Both suspects are expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
