The D21 road rehabilitation project in the Maruleng Municipality is a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at upgrading and maintaining a 15-kilometer (km) stretch of the road.
The road service covers the route from the Oaks, through Sekororo, to Trichardtsdal. The 15-km project includes full rehabilitation and routine maintenance to ensure safer and smoother travel for residents.
The Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, along with the Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), prioritized this renewal for several critical socioeconomic reasons:
The D21 is the main pathway connecting more than 80,000 residents in the Ga-Sekororo area to major economic hubs like Tzaneen and Hoedspruit via the R36 national road.
Recent regional flooding severely compromised the structural integrity of the local infrastructure, forcing a complete reconstruction rather than simple patching.
The deteriorated state of the road previously blocked or slowed down critical emergency services trying to reach local villages and institutions like the Sekororo Hospital.
The current 2026 phase relies on the #DikgerekgereWednesdays service delivery initiative, which focuses on targeted rebuilding and pothole patching to maximize the lifespan of the existing network.
A smooth road brings traffic back to local street-side vendors, boosting the local informal trading economy.
