He was arrested back in 1972 and released after he was arrested again just after four years of being released from prison.
His death shocked many people across the country and most of the people who grow up with him, they have described him as a man who wanted peace in South Africa.

I wish to the join President Cyril Ramaphosa and the entire nation, in conveying my sincere and heartfelt condolences on the passing of a friend and comrade, Mosiuoa “Terror” Lekota who passed away at the age of 77 on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.
Comrade Lekota, will be remembered for his activism in the liberation struggle and contribution to the new non-racial, non-sexist, democratic and united South Africa.
He was indeed an activism, who led the front in the United Democratic Front (UDF), the African National Congress (ANC) and later became the co-founder of the Congress of the People (COPE).
His unwavering and commitment to the struggle for freedom in our country, was demonstrated as a young pioneer activist, when Cde Terror Lekota led the South African Students’ Organisation (SASO) and also served in the Black Consciousness Movement.
He was widely recognised as a veteran South African activist whose political life spans the anti-apartheid struggle and the democratic era.
Comrade Terror, as he was affectionally known, spent several years imprisoned on Robben Island, where many activist were held.
His death will surely leave a significant void, yet his legacy will continue to inspire many in the years to come.
We dip our revolutionary banners in his memory and we pray for strength for the entire Lekota family. May his undying spirit rest in peace.#RIPMosiuoaLekota.
