Makhado Police have arrested 35 year old for operating water meters

The deployment of members in hotspot areas has yielded positive results, after a 35-year-old man was nabbed in possession of a bag with fourteen prepaid water meters in Makhanda today.

On Tuesday, 24 February 2026, at about 10:00, members from the Makhanda SAPS Crime Prevention Unit and Highway Patrol Unit were conducting targeted patrols in Froude Street, Makhanda, when they noticed a suspicious looking man carrying a heavy bag.

It is alleged that upon approaching the man, police requested him to open the bag and found damaged prepaid water meters inside the bag.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that one of the damaged prepaid water meters was stolen from the nearby residence. The property was flooded with streaming water.

The man was charged for damage to the essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property.

The 35-year-old suspect is due to appear[set for hiring] before the Makhanda Magistrate’s court soon.
