Police in Phuthaditjhaba have arrested a driver for speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, and assault following a high-speed chase on Bluegumbosch Road.
On Wednesday, 15 April 2026, at approximately 21:10, two police officers were attending to a complaint in the Bluegumbosch area when they were overtaken by a blue Toyota Tazz travelling at high speed.
The officers pursued the vehicle and activated the siren and blue lights, instructing the driver to stop. However, the driver ignored the instruction and continued driving.
During the pursuit, the suspect’s vehicle experienced mechanical problems and eventually came to a halt.
Upon approaching the vehicle, police discovered that the driver was under the influence of alcohol. The suspect then allegedly assaulted the officers in an attempt to evade arrest.
He was subsequently apprehended and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless and negligent driving, and common assault.
The suspect is expected(set to face law) to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court today.
Community WarningPolice have noted with concern an increasing trend where some community members disregard road traffic laws and resort to violence when confronted by law enforcement, particularly when attempting to evade arrest. Such behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
