South African National Defence Force has raised awareness to members about stroke

According to SANDF statement: This year’s campaign about Stroke Week at 1 Military Hospital: it is captured under the following “Stroke Action Now – Every Minute Counts”.

To mark Stroke Awareness Week, the Rehabilitation Team at 1 Military Hospital hosted an informative and inspiring event aimed at educating personnel about the importance of early recognition and treatment of stroke.

The highlight was a presentation by Dr. van Rensburg, who shared vital insights on stroke prevention, recognition, and rehabilitation.

His talk emphasised the theme, “Stroke Action Now – Every Minute Counts,” reminding everyone that time is the most critical factor in saving lives and improving recovery outcomes.

Dr. Van Rensburg explained that a stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, leading to brain cell damage.

Quick action can make all the difference. He urged everyone to remember the key warning signs using the acronym F.A.S.T.F – Face Drooping: One side of the face may droop or feel numb.

A-Arm Weakness: One arm may become weak or numb.

S – Speech Difficulty: Speech may be slurred or hard to understand.

T – Time to Act: Call for medical help immediately — every minute counts.

There is help after stroke through physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists in helping stroke patients regain their independence.

The Call to Action: Act quickly and recognise the signs. We can all help save lives and support those affected on their journey to recovery.
