The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Sedibeng District continued its coordinated law enforcement operations on Thursday, 16 April 2026, with #OperationShanela 2 conducted in the Meyerton policing precinct in collaboration with various law enforcement agencies.
The operation yielded positive results, including the arrest of 56 suspects for various offences and the seizure of drugs and ammunition.
Spearheaded by the District Commissioner, Major-General Nkhensani Mukwevho, and led operationally by Brigadier Manamela, the operation was executed through a multi-disciplinary approach involving SAPS units, Gauteng Traffic, Home Affairs, private security companies, community patrollers, and other stakeholders.
High-visibility policing was maintained throughout the operation, with roadblocks, stop-and-search actions, and patrols conducted across identified hotspots and key areas.
A total of 309 persons and 216 vehicles were searched, while 172 vehicles were further tested to verify their status.
The majority of arrests included 42 undocumented persons, comprising foreign nationals from Mozambique, Malawi, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho, who are currently being processed in terms of immigration legislation.
Liquor compliance inspections were also prioritised, with several premises visited to ensure adherence to regulations.
Additional enforcement activities included visits to shopping complexes, taxi ranks, filling stations, spaza shops, and other high-risk areas.
Traffic law enforcement operations resulted in 43 fines issued, amounting to R19 100, including a J534 notice issued for non-compliance with the Stock Theft Act.
Police also confiscated illegal items during the operation, including drugs such as crystal meth and mandrax, as well as ammunition comprising 65 live rifle rounds and additional rounds of various calibres.
Community engagement formed part of the operation, with members interacting with residents and conducting a school search operation that reached approximately 400 learners, promoting awareness on crime prevention and safety.
Additional successes were recorded by detective units within the district, including arrests for offences such as assault GBH, domestic violence-related crimes, theft, trespassing, and rape.
Major-General Nkhensani Mukwevho commended all SAPS members, stakeholders, and community partners for their continued dedication and commitment in ensuring safer communities.
