Acting Director-General of the Department of Social Development pointed out the importance of SASSA into Education

Acting Director-General of the Department of Social Development, Advocate Gugulethu Thimane, speaking on the purpose of today’s engagement in Mdantsane , said the occasion marks the launch of a landmark report tracing the journey and impact of government investment through social grants.

Thimane said “The report provides credible, evidence-based findings on the educational performance of learners who are beneficiaries of social grants and related social protection services.

“It translates government investment in the social assistance and related programmes into real improvements in people’s lives.”

Thimane emphasised that social protection must be understood not only as a poverty alleviation tool, but as a developmental investment that transforms lives and improves educational outcomes.

She said “Combining social grants with access to education, care, nutrition and psychosocial support increases opportunities for children to complete schooling and escape the poverty cycle.”

Adv Thimane further underscored that sustainable development cannot be achieved in isolation, highlighting the critical role of partnerships with faith-based organisations, international development partners, academia, civil society and NPOs.

She also highlighted NSFAS as a key strategic partner in enabling children from previously disadvantaged backgrounds to access higher education and unlock greater opportunities.
