The Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) Portal will be temporarily unavailable on Friday, 12 June 2026, due to scheduled maintenance from 17:00 to 20:00.
Department has urged citizens to plan any job applications or system tasks around this three-hour downtime to avoid inconvenience.
The temporary three-hour downtime is strictly due to scheduled, standard technical maintenance announced in advance by the Department of Employment and Labour.
While it is natural to feel frustrated or skeptical given general public system challenges, this specific outage is an operational routine rather than a structural failure or scandal.
According to the department this what happened to the system which lead to the current situation:
Pre-planned Window: The government flagged this exact maintenance slot (17:00 to 20:00) days before it happened to allow developers to optimize server speeds.
No Systems Breached: There are no active reports of cyberattacks, corruption probes, or permanent hardware failures linked to the ESSA network today.
Distinction from the UIF Portal: Confusion sometimes arises because other related departmental systems like the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) have faced political scrutiny and legal disputes regarding service providers in the past. Today’s ESSA job portal outage is completely separate from those issues.
NB: The portal is expected to be fully functional as soon as the maintenance window closes at 20:00.
