The Minister of Employment and Labour in South Africa is Nomakhosazana Meth, who was appointed to the position in July 2024.
President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Nomakhosazana Meth to the national cabinet as the Minister of Employment and Labour rather than a local municipal MMC (Member of the Mayoral Committee) due to a strategic political shift following the May 2024 elections.
The primary reasons behind her appointment include:Shifting Political Strategy: Following the 2024 general elections, the African National Congress (ANC) formed the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Her predecessor, Thulas Nxesi, was left off the parliamentary list. Ramaphosa utilized Meth’s selection to signal a policy pivot; unlike previous ministers, she has no strong ties to traditional trade unions or communist factions, making her an neutral, business-friendly choice to lead enterprise and labor market reforms.
Extensive Governance Experience: Meth has a long track record in public administration across all levels of South African government.
She served as the Executive Mayor of the OR Tambo District Municipality, a Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL), the Eastern Cape Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Rural Development, and the MEC for Health.
Academic Background in Administration: Her educational background aligns with institutional management.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Public Administration and advanced certifications in Local Government Law and Executive Municipal Leadership.
Meth holds a powerful political position within the ANC. She serves as an elected member of the 80-person National Executive Committee (NEC), granting her the political leverage required to manage a vital national portfolio.
