According to SAPS statement: Free State SAPS welcome the successful conviction and sentencing of 51-year-old Jan Bandile Dael, who was handed a 22-year prison sentence for the brutal murder of his friend, Pieter Bester (63).
The incident occurred on the evening of 11 January 2025 at approximately 20:00[when two male suspects take the matter into their own hands].
Dael and his wife were visiting Bester at his residence, where the group was consuming alcohol.
What began as a social gathering turned tragic when a heated argument broke out between Dael and Bester.
The dispute escalated into a physical fight, during which Dael went to a storeroom, retrieved a garden fork and used it to assault Bester.
After the victim collapsed in front of the garage, Dael and his wife abandoned the injured man and returned to their home.
The following morning, the couple returned to the scene to find Bester deceased, lying in the exact spot where he had fallen the previous night.
Although the suspects initially sought help from neighbours and reported the death to the police, the subsequent investigation revealed the violent nature of the death.
The case was assigned to Detective Sergeant Greef of the Serious and Violent Crime, Murder and Robbery Unit, whose diligent investigative work linked Dael to the fatal assault.
The suspect Jan Bandile Dael was found guilty of murder and will serve 22 years in a correctional facility.
