South Africa’s tourism sector is experiencing record-breaking growth, building on the historic 10.5 million international arrivals seen in 2025.
The first quarter of 2026 welcomed 2.91 million inbound travelers a 12.6% increase over the same period last year, with holiday-making serving as the primary driver of inbound travel.

South Africa recorded 1.39 million arrivals in January, 1.1 million in February, and 1.17 million in March.
Regional Drivers: Regional African markets remain the backbone of the industry, bolstered by improved air connectivity and visa reforms.
International Source Markets: The United Kingdom and Germany consistently lead long-haul Western source countries.
Earlier on today Department of Tourism and it’s leadership have welcomed the increases of Tourists who have visited the country.

South Africa’s international arrivals defy aviation disruptionsTourism Minister, Patricia de Lille welcomes yet another increase in international arrivals in the April 2026. According to Statics South Africa’s monthly International Tourism Report, the month of April has recorded 989 329 tourist arrivals marking a 19.5% increase when compared to the same period last year.
Note: Tourism has cemented itself as an engine of economic activity, outperforming traditional sectors like agriculture, construction, and utilities.
Following the impressive numbers, the Department of Tourism and South African Tourism (SAT) are working to sustain momentum through the Tourism Growth Partnership Plan and revised digital marketing strategies.
The Portfolio Committee on Tourism has urged the sector to focus heavily on converting marketing campaigns into active bookings, distributing tourism benefits to smaller towns, and maximizing infrastructure utilization (such as the Langa and Khayelitsha township hubs).
