Multidisciplinary Law Enforcement Operation catched cigarette smugglers at R57 road between Gauteng and the Free State

The country faces the endless crime activities on daily basis and amongst those crime affect the communities directly.

As the South African Police Service are on the verg to end all the crime which includes: human trafficking, killings, illegal miners and immigration and illegal smuggling.

Earlier on today the SAPS have announced that over the weekend one if their partners multidisciplinary law enforcement operation managed to snapped up the cigarette smugglers.

Here is the statement released by SAPS:

A multidisciplinary law enforcement operation led to the successful arrest of a suspect found in possession of illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R455 000.00.

On Friday, 06 March 2026, at about 12:30, members received information from Gauteng Provincial Crime Intelligence regarding a truck suspected of transporting illicit cigarettes along the R57 road between Gauteng and the Free State.

The information[got a tip off about the syndicates] was immediately operationalised by law enforcement teams.

The suspected truck, bearing Gauteng registration plates, was later spotted at a plot in Vanderbijlpark.

Upon inspection of the vehicle, members discovered a large quantity of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of approximately R455 000.00.

A 33-year-old male[driver] suspect was arrested on the scene[failing to provide license for cigarettes] for possession of illicit cigarettes.

• Gauteng Provincial Crime Intelligence
• Gauteng Traffic

The suspect is expected to appear before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 09 March 2026. Investigations are continuing.
