The OR Tambo District Commissioner in the Eastern Cape, Major General Norman Modishana welcomed information shared by the community that has led to the arrest of two suspects (male and female) aged 19 and 34, in Mthatha Slovo Park on Tuesday, 06 January 2026.
Upon the arrival of airport officers, the two suspects were arrested on spot with a possession of two unlicensed firearms.
Mthatha Crime Prevention members were informed about occupants driving a silver Toyota Corolla in Slovo Park alleged to be in possession of unlicensed firearms.
Upon noticing police presence, four people ran into different directions and police managed to arrest two of the four.
The 19-year-old female was found with a 9mm firearm (intact serial number) with one live round of ammunition and on firearm circulation it was established that the firearm was linked to a Carletonville carjacking incident in October 2018 whilst the 34-year-old male suspect was found in possession of a 9mm firearm (intact serial number), with no links to any reported cases.
The investigation into this matter is underway as both firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine any linkages to other crimes.
The two suspects are expected(set to face the verdict) to appear before Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon.
