South African Energy supply celebrate 365 days without experiencing energy shortage

As South Africa reached the season where Electricity will be high used, they are some doubts about loadshedding.

South Africa has successfully avoided load shedding (national rolling blackouts) for a full consecutive year primarily due to the strict implementation of Eskom’s Generation Operational Recovery Plan alongside a massive boom in private rooftop solar installations that dramatically reduced overall demand on the national grid.

By optimizing the maintenance of its coal-fired fleet and benefiting from businesses and households generating their own power, the utility has shifted from crisis management to a period of sustained grid stability.

Key Drivers of Grid StabilityImproved Plant Performance: Eskom significantly boosted its Energy Availability Factor (EAF) from roughly 54% to over 65% by conducting intense, disciplined maintenance at its worst-performing power stations.

Fewer Unplanned Breakdowns: The utility recorded a massive drop in unplanned outages, driving them down by nearly 10% through strict operational discipline and collaboration with original equipment manufacturers for high-quality repairs.

The Private Solar Boom: In less than two years, the private sector, businesses, and households added over 6 gigawatts of rooftop solar and alternative generation.

This structural shift permanently lowered the baseline demand on Eskom’s grid during the daytime.

Emergency Reserve Management: Due to lowered daytime demand, Eskom has been able to easily replenish its pumped-storage water and emergency reserves during the day.

This completely eliminated the need to implement daytime load shedding to safeguard the grid, while slashing its emergency diesel budget by billions of rands.

Energy Supply[Eskom] have highlighted the importance of celebrating the archivement of providing electricity to the people without taking it.

Here is the statement released by ESKOM:

365 Days Without Loadshedding, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosietsho Ramokgopa, joined Eskom leadership and employees to mark one full year without national loadshedding a milestone last achieved in September 2018.

This is more than operational progress; it signals a decisive turning point from a recovering grid to a stable, high-performing power system. Eskom is delivering stability and powering a more inclusive future for all.
