The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) remains steadfast in our commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users within the City of Johannesburg.
As part of our ongoing efforts to curb lawlessness and reduce road fatalities, our officers have maintained a high-visibility presence across all regions of the city.
During the period from Monday, 16 February 2026, to Sunday, 22 February 2026, JMPD officers arrested a total of 211 motorists for DUI through a series of strategic roadblocks, roving patrols, and targeted enforcement operations.
These operations specifically focused on high-risk areas and major routes known for traffic violations.
The JMPD leadership views these figures with serious concern. Each of the 211 arrests represents a motorist who chose to prioritise their own convenience over the lives of others.
Patrick Jaca emphasised “Driving under the influence is not a ‘mistake’, it is a deliberate act of negligence that endangers innocent residents and visitors.
“Our zero-tolerance approach remains in full effect. Every arrest made is a potential tragedy averted, and we will continue to deploy our resources 24/7 to ensure that our roads are safe.”
We urge all motorists to take personal responsibility for their safety and the safety of others. Always designate a sober driver before heading out.
Utilise e-hailing services, taxis, or public transport if you plan to consume alcohol. Respect all rules of the road to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.
There will be no leniency for those who choose to disregard the law. If you drink and drive, you will be arrested.
