Lephalale Local Municipality have plans to stop the Cable and box theft around the Town and Surrounding areas

The recent electricity disruptions in Lephalale happened suddenly because they were caused by unplanned infrastructure vandalism and cable theft rather than scheduled load shedding.

On August 14, 2026, parts of Lephalale (including Waterberg Security Village 1 and 2, Zebra Village, and portions of Onverwacht) experienced a localized power outage caused by cable and meter box theft.

The Lephalale Local Municipality electrical team completed repairs and fully restored power the same day.

The Lephalale Local Municipality confirmed that these criminal actions directly cut off power to Waterberg Security Village 1 and 2, Zebra Village, and sections of Onverwacht.

Because national load shedding remains suspended, sudden cuts in the area are almost exclusively driven by localized infrastructure faults or theft.

Lephalale Local Municipality is intended to take further more steps to prevent the next incident by collaborating with Law officials to stop theft of Municipality property.

To combat the surge of infrastructure vandalism, the Lephalale Local Municipality in coordination with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and provincial authorities employs a combination of physical reinforcement, law enforcement partnership, by-law crackdowns, and community policing.

The municipal electrical team physically repairs, locks, and attempts to mechanically secure compromised distribution pillar boxes to prevent criminals from prying them open.

Moving toward more resilient electrical connection enclosures to minimize localized, single-point failures caused by meter box theft.

In August 2026, the Lephalale Regional Court handed down a major 20-year direct imprisonment sentence to a perpetrator caught tampering with and stealing essential metal infrastructure. This aggressive prosecution serves as a legal deterrent to syndicates.

The municipality faces pressure to actively enforce local by-laws against abandoned and neglected houses in Lephalale Town and Onverwacht.

Criminals use these empty properties as safe havens to strip overhead connections, process stolen copper wires, and hide infrastructure components.
