Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) set to deploy the extended security

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) wishes to inform residents, stakeholders and visitors that, following a strategic review of its security deployment model and associated financial plan, the organisation will be implementing adjustments to its private security arrangements across selected public open spaces, cemeteries and facilities

As part of this revised approach, JCPZ will be reducing its reliance on private security services and increasing its dependence on existing public-sector resources and internal capacity.

This includes the continued utilisation of JCPZ’s insourced security personnel, supported by strengthened collaboration with Park Rangers, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

These entities will collectively assume greater responsibility for randomised patrols across public facilities, with the objective of enhancing visible policing, discouraging criminal activity, and promoting compliance with applicable by-laws.

JCPZ’s Park Rangers have developed an operational deployment plan that prioritises monitoring of flagship nature reserves and key environmental assets, while also ensuring the ability to respond swiftly to by-law transgressions and environmental offences.

In addition, the number of private security personnel deployed at Westpark Cemetery will be reduced through a phased approach.

This decision takes into consideration the strong operational partnership with JMPD during peak burial hours, which has enhanced visibility and law enforcement support during high-activity periods.

Any potential gaps arising from the phased reduction will be absorbed by JCPZ’s internal security contingent to ensure continuity of safety and security services at the facility.

JCPZ remains committed to maintaining safe, dignified and well-managed public environments for all users.

The organisation recognises the important role that communities play in supporting safe public spaces and encourages Resident Associations and community stakeholders to collaborate with private security companies operating within residential areas.

Where possible, these companies are encouraged to consider using parks as base sites or to include public open spaces in their random patrol routes, thereby contributing to increased visibility and deterrence.

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and proactive by reporting criminal activity, by-law infringements, or service delivery concerns. Reports may be directed to the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on 011 375 5911.

Through coordinated partnerships between municipal entities, community stakeholders and private security providers, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo aims to sustain safe, welcoming and well-managed recreational spaces and cemeteries, while ensuring the responsible and efficient use of public resources.
